I have recently rediscovered Gene (by accident) and I have loved his music thru the years. I have his new cd, but I would like to find his 60's songs on cd. If anyone could help me located cds of Gene's earlier songs, I would appreciate it very much. Thank you. Andy

So glad to find this!  I remember Gene well from Bill Hall's office in Nashville in the early 70's.  it was always a pleasure to see him and an absolutely unforgettable treat to hear him sing there!

Over the years we have loss touch both growing up and going on our ways. You were 12 years older than me.  My Aunt Leslie married your dad for a while in Houston. I was that pest of a little cousin from Beaumont. Good to see your web site and to hear "Sometimes" again. I tried to sing it all the time when I was a kid.

Hi, I have always loved Gene Thomas. I grew up in Houston, and went in the early 60's to a place called Teen Hall, my friend Linda & I went 3 times a week in the summer.  I believe Gene performed there, or maybe I just heard his songs played there.  My favorite was baby's gone.  I would love to know if Gene did play at Teen Hall. Gene's voice has always been one of my favorites.  I know I have baby's gone on a 45.  Thanks for the great music memories!!

Greetings:  I am Canadian, live just North of Toronto and met Gene on the interent.  No we where not "Bonding'"  I write a fairly successful Music Blog www.strathdee.wordpress.com and I did a post on Gene.   Well since then we have exchanged a few emails, we are similar in age and just kinda hit it off.  Yes, even for a Canadian, Sometime is a favourite.  His posting still gets daily hits, so I'm not the only one who enjoys Gene's Music.

I am very happy to see this site for one of America's most heartfelt and sincere songwriters! Gene has always been one of my favorites for his gentle and yet direct evocation of the human heart. It is most difficult to write lyrics that evoke tremendous feeling with utter simplicity. The music and lyrics state the message and stimulate the feeling without noise and distraction. Gene simply lets the message pour over your thoughts and memories for your pleasure and not his. Very few artists let you feel the feeling without their own personal involvement. Gene's lyrics and beautiful melodies approach you like a wise sage who whispers in your ear for your own epihany. I would point you to "Lay it Down" as a pure example of a songwriter "getting out of the way" of your feelings. Gene is a true treasure and wildly misunderstood for blazing his own personal trail in a cluttered and unjust system, such as the record industry. We are the victors of his art that is untainted by the moguls who wish to shape and change you for the masses. For that, Gene will always be remembered and appreciated by those of us who see through the "manufactured art" to a true artist who inspires and comforts. That is the true aim of songwriting and Gene Thomas has and continues to hit the mark.

Best wishes my friend,

Joshua Browne

Gene Thomas was one of the most innovative singers and songwriters of our time.  My two favorite Gene Thomas songs are Baby's Gone Away, and Playboy that he sang with a female artist.   I would love to hear Gene Thomas, does he still appear in person?

Thanks  Rey

His voice and songs bring back great memories of my past, Thank You Mr. Thomas.

Hi Gene. this is Johnny and you may not remember but you did a really decent thing In 1995 when you took time out to speak to my brother Greg one night after I searched all over and called every Gene Thomas listed. I just wanted my brother to be able to talk with you as you were one of his favorite singers when he was growing up and I was his little brother so you were also one of my favorites. It meant the world to him before he left us to be able to share a little time on the phone with you.  Heck I listened to oldies when I was in high school at a time when everyone in the 70's was into hard rock. I was like 5 yrs old when my brother Greg (whom you took time out for that night in 1995), would take me for rides on his motor scooter as I held a transistor radio as we listened to oldies. I had 2 of yur original 45's (Baby's Gone Away, and the other with Sometime and Everynight).  They were lost when I moved. I am glad you have this site and I understand you have a CD. Please let me know if I can purchase one. Thanks again for making my brother's life a little more happy prior to his death. He really cherished the time you took for him that evening. Thank you Gene for being a decent human being.  Johnny Longoria on behalf of Gregory Longoria.

Hi Darlene,

Looks like you are managing Gene's Blog for him.  Just wondering if you are his wife?

Gene's name and music is being shared among my friends on Facebook.  This is where I rediscoved his song, "Sometime.".  I do not know him personally myself but some of my friends knew him fairly well.  They knew him before he started recording in 1961. I remember "Sometime"  well and became a big fan after it was recorded in 1961. It brings back wonderful memories!  I live in AZ now but lived between Houston and Freeport most of my life.

I just wanted to say "Hi" to Gene and let him know how much my friends and I  appreciate hearing his music from the past.  I hope you are well and happy Gene!  God bless you my friend!

Gene,

I was a sophomore at Spring Branch High School (Class of '64) near Houston when I first heard your song "Sometimes".   Immediately I went to the record store and bought it.   I loved the words, the message, and the feelings that the song and your voice envoked.   But, much to my surprise, when I played the back side, I found "Everynight", and I loved it even more.  Both songs spoke to me and my Sweetheart at the time.  We danced to both and loved with honor as only kids of that time did.  We sang along with you and promised each other we would never part.  Well, sad to say we never married, but to this day I find myself humming or out right singing those songs.

I play guitar, bass and harmonica.  And yes, it never fails, when I find time to play, "Sometimes" and "Everynight' are at the top of my list.

I recently found my high school Sweetheart.  We listened to your songs once again, and many old feelings have been renewed.

I just want to say thank you for your music.  If you should ever play in the Houston area or near by, I hope I can be there.

You have so many friends and fans out here that love you and your music.

May God Bless You and keep you in his Care for many years to come,

Ron Beale

I've always loved your song "Watching It Go"........I can relate to your beautiful words.  Actually a long time friend turned me on to the song.  His name, Denny Ezba.  He used to sing it to anyone who would put up with him for a few minutes.....haha......He's gone now......but he sure did love the song and also "Farther on Down The Road".......another great one.

So happy I happened upon your facebook page and website.

Hi Gene, Hope all is well with you, and your diabetes is under control. I have been a fan of yours since the eary 60's , and was a 45's collector for many years. I had most of your 45's, even some promotional ones, that perhaps were never released?.....One in particular that I had was "The Puppet", which I think is one one the best songs I have ever heard. Unfortunately, I sold my collection a few years ago, and somehow that record was in the lot. I have looked all over to get another copy, which was on United artists #583. In my humble opinion, you are a standout in the writing and recording industry, and wish that your work had been better promoted. I know for sure that you could have had a much more prolific career in music, had it not been for the lack of exposure. I have a close friend who also recorded back in the 50's, under several different labels and names, and couldn't catch a break, even after an appearance on American Bandstand. He was a great doo-wop singer. Luckily, I have managed to find most of his recordings on 45's or cd. I wish that someday your early recordings can be put on a CD,sort of a "Best of" compilation , so people who are younger than us can enjoy and appreciate your music. IT's a compilation that is long overdue. I know it may be difficult to get the masters of your early stuff, but maybe worth a try. Thanks for taking the time to read my letter, and wish you all the best in life that has yet to come. If you know of a resource that may have the song "the puppet", I would love to know, so I can replace my lost copy. Stay healthy as possible, and thank you for all the wonderful music you made. It was and still is a part of my life. Kind regards, Brian

Hi Dave, I'm not sure of the "story" behind Lay it down, and I don't know if your inquiry has been answered by private mail, so at the risk of sounding like Rosanne Barr trying to interpret the words of F. Scott Fitzgerald, I will share what Gene's words mean to me in this song. Keep in mind that one of the accomplishments of a great songwriter is choosing words and their formation in the lyrics to allow for the listener's OWN interpretation, allowing them to mean what one's own life allows or needs. I think the QUESTION in the song is the meaning of "IT". My thoughts are that IT is our burdens, our own limitations regarding openness and acceptance, the pain that those limitations cause us. The things that separate us from one another, walls that are built, injustice in the world...our pains in general. I feel that in writing this song especially, Gene opened his soul. He admitted weakness in himself and all of mankind, the sorrow and pain of aloneness, the hurt that one man inflicts on another on battlefield and streets, in homes. "Burdened by the things I've learned, hurting 'cause I'm too concerned. None the less I confess I yearn to find a way to lay it down." Many people recorded this song, their lifestyles are varied. ALL found it impressive enough to sing it from their hearts. The song had different meanings to each of them I would imagine. They FELT Gene's message, he was honored, as he deserved. I hope this makes the song clearer for you, and I hope I'm near correct in my own interpretation. danna

Gene, If you get this... after so many decades I found info on you. Back in 1961and my first "love" Sometime was our song. We danced to it every week end in the dance halls of Hallettsville, Yoakum, Shiner, Schulenberg. Cover bands like The Moods played it. I hope you are doing well, perhaps I could attend one of the "oldies jams". Take care, Alex

What an honor to have Gene Thomas as my friend. Gene knows the story....but I must share with all who know and love him. My fondest teenage memories are the hours I spent listening to my Dad sing Gene's songs as he played his Gibson guitar. He always included "The Streets of Loredo" as it was Dad's favorite. Like Dad....My passion is singing and songwriting. A couple of years ago I found Gene on SoundClick. I never dreamed our paths would cross, and I know Dad surely had something to do with it! Gene is a true gentleman and the best songwriter I have encountered. It has taken me two years to choose my favorite "Gene Thomas" song....and I found it today....it took my breath away......"I Took You For Granted Too Long"....a real jewel, Gene! If I could only tune in to a fraction of your songwriting talent, I will have earned the title. Many Blessings to you both, Gene and Darlene. Good Day. For the past 12 years, I have been the host of "The Memory Lane Show" on www.RockitRadio.net . We are pleased to have become one of the internet's leading sites for 50's/60's music. As part of our program, we feature numerous "sound bites" of artists that we use to help introduce their records. We've been privileged to have interviewed hundreds of artists over the years. Gene recorded some of my favorite tunes from the era, and I would welcome the opportunity to record an interview with Gene at a mutually convenient time. If Gene is willing to chat, please let me know at MemoryLaneShow@aol.com . Many thanks!
