Gene Thomas-The Songwriter

Posted by Darlene on March 3, 2010 at 7:21 PM

Gene has spent most of his lifetime with a deep passion for songwriting, with true hope of conveying his thoughts to all who might listen.

He weaves the words, like no other, to a point, that the meaning often times seems hidden, lost, or even misconstrued.

Gene is a walking talking mystery to many.  The mystery is solved if you interpret his songs the way in which he intended and hoped you would.

The reward to Gene is when he feels the listener is aware of his message and through this, brings his gratitude for many strong friendships along his way.

Gene asked me a long time ago, of the songs he had written, did I have a favorite?  I told him that my favorite would be the next one he wrote.

In my opinion, the true accomplishment of a great songwriter is one who leaves more behind than he gathers.

THIS IS GENE THOMAS!!!!!!!!!!!

I miss Gene Thomas bad. I am now 66 yr. old. I have always felt 10-15 yrs. born too late. I played professionally from 1965-1998 & always felt I could've gone way farther had I been able to hang with all these guys just a smidgeon older, & right down the road in Houston from El Campo. Now retired from other work & everyday wondering what could have been. ..............sob...

Yea Doug, As Gene knows,, I was trying to make it in the 'singing' business almost at the same time as Gene. A little bit later I think - '66-68. I had one record in the top forty on Billboard and another one bubbling around the bottom of the top 100. It wan't much of a start but it did allowed me to recieve a lot of offers in South Texas, Houston and Padre island mostly. I did received a few offers from places like California and Chicago but didn't accept because I didn't hae the money to get up there. The kind of funny thing was, I was a big fan of Gene's and two of his record, "Sometimes I Cry" and "Babys Gone Away" to me were at least top ten material so I sang them all over the place and I hesitate to say it but as I rememember, the crowds showed their appreciation a little louder on Gene's songs than on mine. I didn't mind though because I liked his songs better than mine also..

I am ashamed to admit that I kind of forgot about Gene, until I went to Garner State Park in June. One of the people
attending made 3 CD's of music from Garner. Gene was all over the place. I especially love 'This is the Last Song'
Hopefully, that is the name of it. The postings on the website indicated that he was going to play in Houston in June and
July. I never saw annthing further about it. Please let me know when and where he is going to play. If it's anywhere in
Texas, If I can possibly attend, I will

Gene Thomas...what a voice!!!! What originality as a songwriter!!! Words that flow from his vocals , born of his mind, heart and soul. To me, he is unsurpassed in his talent and Gene is a great guy! When I first started singing in Houston, Gene was at the peak of his career of great hits. He was a featured act at a venue where my band & I were the house band. What an awesome pleasure and great honor to sit and listen to this man sing on stage...then, what was even more enjoyable was when sometimes after the gig was over, Gene would sit and sing and play accoustic guitar and my brothers(the Turner's) and I and others gathered 'round would just listen, in amazement, at the smoothest voice, the most soulful voice, those well-written original songs, the haunting melodies, made us want to hear more & more. We have never stopped wanting to hear more & more! I am proud to call Gene Thomas my friend and to have in a small way been associated with him. Just one gigantic request, Gene.....PLEASE KEEP WRITING, SINGING, RECORDING....put it out there...please.
Wishing Gene Thomas all the best ! An old (well not that old....ha) friend, Lauretta Turner Gholston

We finally found Gene Thomas: I grew up in Corpus Christi. Gene Thomas' songs were played at our high school prom [1962] and for years after. Almost since that time Gene seems to just fade away. He was a huge favorite in Corpus. Off and on for yearsj my friends and I would ask around, "what ever happened to Gene Thomas"? A year or so ago we were talking to a Houston newspaper reporter who had been covering the Texas music scene for most of his life and is still considered an expert in the time period of 1969 to 1972. He told us, of course, he knew who Gene Thomas was but had no idea what had happened to him. He was as curious as us and as it turned out a big Gene Thomas fan too. He wrote a feature article in the Houston chroniclel making a list of the 100 greatest singer/song writers to ever come out of Texas. Gene was not on the list and the resujlt was a buckload of emails coming in to the newspaper basically say, "Where the heck is Gene Thomas"? The reporter was simply boweled overl by the response. Well, we found Mr. Thomas because he emailed us to basically say, "Here I am; just where I've been for a long time". I emailed back and forth with Gene 3-4 times and found him to be a really nice guy; humble up front all the way.and more that a bit surprised by all the new clamor and attention after more than 40 years. Me and all my friends were happy guys because finally we got to listen to Gene Thomas songs over and over again. Two of our number 1 favorites are, "Sometimes I Cry", and "Babies Gone Away and Left Me Lonely.". Thanks Gene for once again giving us the gift of your great talent.

I love Gene Thomas--he's the greatest songwriter I've ever played with, or will probably ever play with. I wished we could play some more gigs together but we do truly live in opposite galaxies. Miss ya Gene, your number one fan--claude.
